[Hanoi 1890's-1900's, Dieulefilis Studio]. Black 3/4 cloth over green cloth covered boards, black ribbon ties, ca. 26.8 x 34.5 cm.,83 card mounted glossy photos, various sizes, bit faded as usual, poignant views. * RARE & OBSCURE EXAMPLE * . *** **** *** . . AN ORIGINAL LOOSE PORTFOLIO PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM . . . WITH 83 GLOSSY SILVER SULFIDE SEPIA-TONED IMAGES . . . ATTRIBUTED TO THE GREAT FRENCH PHOTOGRAPHER . . . PIERRE DIEULEFILS . * This is an exceptionally RARE & OBSCURE example consisting of 83 stiff board sheets, 25 x 32.5 cm., with silver sulfide sepia toned glossy images, one per sheet. Remarkably, this process helped to preserve and stop fading. Nevertheless most images are not greatly faded, but being over 100 + years old there is naturally some usual fading. . The majority of the images have a number in the negative either in the lower right or left corner. The images are in numeric order, some skips in the numbering, in all 83 images. . The size of the images are for the most part standardized 11.4 x 15 cm.; larger images are 16.7 x 11 cm. Each image is laid down on the board. There are no verso words or other marks. . All images are all clear, nicely & artistically composed by a professional [yet unnamed] French photographer, whom we believe to be Pierre Dieulefilis. Many of the images on his postcards are remarkably similar to these individual photos. . The numbering system does not give any clues to the photographer, but we do know that Dieulefils commonly put numbers in the lower corner for thousands of his photo postcards of Indochina during this period. The images are very strongly reminiscent of his work including the same kinds of poses of individuals as well as groups of ethnic minority peoples of Ton-King [=N. Vietnam i.e. Hanoi area]. . IMAGE FADING: Please note, our scanner is over skilled at taking photos of faded images and bringing them to more life and brightness. Please take photos with a 'grain of salt.' For example photo illus02.jpg is faded but appears much better in the photo than actual image. This is a common issue with other faded photos as well. . *** THE PHOTOGRAPHER: Pierre Marie Alexis DIEULEFILS [1862-1937]: . He was in Vietnam from circa 1885-1924, an eminent and renown photographer, working for the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Orient around the turn of the 19th century. He documented Indochina life, scenery, people and customs throughout the French protectorate. His visual record is the most in-depth, fascinating primary record of life prior to the advent and entrance of Europeans to the area. . The "first look" at the lands and peoples before influenced by European foreigners. A bewildering look at the poignant images Dieulefils captured for all time. His record stands as one of the earliest and most keen insights to the customs, costumes of native Vietnamese and Montagnardes ever recorded. . THE PORT-FOLIO: While the port-folio is unsigned, it is clearly something produced while Dieulefils was stationed in Hanoi, and the work of his keen perspective on the Indochinese. Many of these similar images of people & scenes are found in the thousands of photographic postcards he left as an historic graphic record of his sojourn in the colony. . The similarities are clearly representative of his keen eye an composition. We therefore attribute this to his professionalism and sensitivities commonly found in other images with his name on them. . In 1888 he opened a photography shop in Hanoi, Dieulefils appears to be the first professional photographer of European origin to have establish himself in Tonkin. His activity was at once that of an operator of image making, traveling throughout the country taking pictures; that of a studio technician, ensuring the development of negatives and the printing of positive prints. . In 1889, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, Dieulefils exhibited a significant selection of his photographs: the major cities of Tonkin, civic or religious buildings, ethnic type.
